Potato chips
Potato chips, or ‘crisps’, as the British call them, were invented in 1953 by George Crum, a chef in a restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York. The invention, as is often the case, was accidental. One of his customers complained that their French-fried potatoes were too thick. The chef got really angry and frustrated. He sliced some potatoes extremely thin, fried them until brown, seasoned them with extra salt and served them to the fastidious customer. To his surprised, the customer really liked the dish. This was the first portion of potato chips, as we know them now. They soon came to be called ‘Saratoga Chips’.
